Whether you are a service based business or have a physical location, your name and address are an important part of your Google My Business (GMB). It not only needs to be accurate, but should reflect your address and name across the internet and on signage.

Let’s start with your name. Your business name should be the same as it is everywhere else. Your GMB listing should not have a different name than the sign on your storefront. If you are service based business it should not look any different than how you promote yourself elsewhere. Not only can Google can suspend you if your name does not match your business, but it promotes a consistent brand for potential customers to make sure it always looks the same.

Address is extremely important for many reasons. One reason it is important is that the address is where an initial postcard is sent to for verification of your account. You need to verify your account before any changes and updates can be made to the listing. If you are a service based business you can choose not to show your address on your listing. You will then choose a service based area to show up for instead of a physical location.

When you have a physical location your address must match that of your location. If it does not match it is another reason Google can suspend your account, but you also want to make sure you are sending your customers to the correct location. A big reason to have your address match is for improved search engine optimization. Google values consistency! If you show the same address across the web you have a better chance of showing up organically in searches. This includes all aspects of your address, including abbreviations. For example, if you have it listed as street, then it shouldn’t be st. elsewhere.
